Derek Ridgers
Tuinol Barry, Chelsea, London (1981)
Stoke Newington (1981)
The psychology portrayed in these pictures is gripping. The expressions, the eyes convey somehow a lonely look. Youth and solitude seem to be far apart but the Derek Ridgers photographs them beautifully together. These black and white pictures were captivating.

Jamel Shabazz
I believed it was important to research on the social aspects of that era, the 1980s. Photographer Jamel Shabazz has frozen youth with sqaure-rimmed glasses and striped T-shirts in New York. Although these are archives from the United States, the trends (more or less) spread worldwide and these two countries have numerous points in common. The pictures depicted a vivid atmosphere and I enjoyed the pops of warm colours here and there with the overall fadedand grained photographs.

Stanley Kubrick
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Stanley Kubrick is one of the greatest filmmakers in history and this movie has a particular style, with wide, flat shots and a stabilised camera to the ground. It conveys a sense of distance but at the same time, that distance creates horror and fear. Like Wes Anderson, I wanted to incorporate such filming technique in my animation.

Wes Anderson
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
The stop motion of Fantastic Mr. Fox was a great inspiration for me to elaborate and refine my animation. Wes Anderson's flat, symmetrical shots and doll house-like atmosphere were eye-catching and taught me how to present my outcome.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The Royal Tennenbaums feature numerous shots taken from above with flat lay-downs of books, letters and other elements arranged on a desktop, perfectly ordered. I wanted to have that same feeling with the camera placed above, parallel to the table.

Izumi Miyazaki
Broccoli (date unknown)
Friends (date unknown)
Simplicity but with a twist. Izumi Miyazaki's works are fun and bizarre. She has her own world and imagination is at the base of it. I wanted to include in my video such simplistic detail that have charm and allure.

Mark Morrisroe
Hello from Bertha 1983-1984
Fascination (Jonathan) 1982
Sensual and sensitive. Mark Morrisroe were ethereal photographies that explored sexuality and one's own identity. The tinted pictures and dream-life effect with the doodles on the side were absolute stunners in my mind and I was most attracted to his works amongst the photographers I researched. Although it served little in my final outcome, I think these were marking works that captured my mind.

Madonna Polaroid 3
Madonna Polaroid 4
These polaroids had a nostalgic feel that captured my eyes in the first place. The expressions of Madonna as well as the fashion were the second things that endeared my heart. It's as if some wave comes crushing down at you and entrances you with its sweetness. I thought these were very good source materials for the pop icon of the 80s.

Steven Spielberg
Back to the Future (1985)
As my postcard was sent in 1987, I thought it would be informative to instruct myself on the context. The 1980s in UK. Although this film is American, I do think it portrays the life and trends of that epoch. The videocameras VHS and VCR have a particular effect that I wanted to include in my animation.
